My final summer harvest…

075

And, honestly, I can’t complain. I pulled in a wagon load (literally) of Sugar Baby watermelons, Amish melons (cantaloupe), and lemon cucumbers today.

077

It. Was. So. Hot.

080

Beyond hot. I’ve lived in Alabama my whole life, so I’m accustomed to the heat and humidity which might suffocate others.

081

This is different. Record breaking heat (as if our summers aren’t hot enough!)

105

My poor plants are withering in the garden.

089

So, I picked all that I could, and we’ll be tilling the garden under this weekend. Giving up the fight.

094

But, not before we enjoy a few Green Zebra tomatoes.

099

And some more eggplants, red bell peppers, and Yellow Jubilee tomatoes.

You know you’re in trouble when the eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers can’t take the heat!

I’m starting to plan my fall garden… and I’m dreaming of cooler days.

Oh my, your final? I haven't gotten my first eggplant yet, or my first ripe tomato. But you are a few states south of me. I just didn't think it was that much of a difference. A suppose a zone or two does make a huge difference.

Your melons look so wonderful. Now to figure out how to keep them until you can eat them all. Always a problem with melons. How do you like those lemon cucs? Everything looks so lovely even if it is HOT HOT HOT!!!

Diane, I usually make it into August before I consider my summer garden officially 'done'... this has just been an off year. We went from record breaking cold straight into record breaking heat.

The lemon cukes are great. A little seedy, but the perfect size for a salad or sandwich. I'm pickling what a picked yesterday, so I don't mind the seeds enough for it to be a bother.

I'll probably plant a different variety next year just for a change of pace. The only constant in my garden are the Homestead tomatoes. : )

Hello Melissa! I'm writing late tonight...but before I turned the computer off I saw that little Emilie is home!! I'm so happy to hear that. I guess all must be ok if the doctors have let her go home to her Momma and Pappa. I bet you're all relieved.

WOW what a harvest it's been for you! This was the first year for your garden at this house? I think that's what you wrote before and if that's the case I can just imagine what it will be like next year if you have a more normal spring and summer..geez. All the vegetables look great but I'm wondering how the melons taste? I planted two mounds but nothing ever really came up. Oh well maybe things will be better next year for us. It's hot here too...the humidity has gone down but it's been 100 and now we're down to a chilly 98. We'll be heading up to Canada soon so maybe that will be our break from the heat although it's usually in the 90's where we're going. Anyway...great news about Emilie and enjoy your harvest! Take care....Maura :)

You're kidding! I can't believe you're done for the summer. I'm in full swing harvesting now and don't know where I would plant anything for the fall. Maybe in a few more weeks my tomatoes will give out and make way for lettuce and broccoli.

Maura, I appreciate you taking the time to comment about Emilie. All seems to be going well with her little digestive track. The doctors are keeping a close eye on her, but felt she was healthy enough to be released. Yay! (And, I'd love to hitch a ride to Canada with you. I've always wanted to go... and now seems a good time to get a breath of cooler air!)

Maybelline, ordinarily, I might mind the early end... but it's too hot to care this summer. I'm looking forward to cooler weather and the vegetables it promises.

Sue, it's all very yummy. Although, your CSA veggies have looked divine, too! I'm ready for a fall harvest. : )

I did not realize that people actually got summer too hot for eggplant! wow...we just worry about ours drowning, lol!

My melons are just now blooming...not a lot of hope for them this soggy cool summer!

Enjoy the heat...I'll send you some cool weather if you send me some sun! Kim
