“Peasant food” at it’s finest

032

I don’t know what it is about winter that makes me crave soups and stews, but I don’t fight it. My crockpot sees a lot of use this time of year. I throw in whatever meat I have on hand (yes, we eat meat almost everyday – but we keep our portions small) and pile on the root veggies, herbs, and seasonings. By that evening, our mouths are watering and the entire house is filled with the aroma of a good, wholesome meal. The best part? I haven’t had to slave over the stove all afternoon.

I also crave beans and greens more this time of year. Beans are a wonderfully frugal meal option and they’re so easy to prepare. I soak dry beans overnight with a little ACV (to neutralize the phytates) and rinse them the next morning. Once they’ve simmered for several hours with a little sea salt, EVOO, onion, and garlic, they simply can’t be beat. I like to eat mine with a bit of sauerkraut. So delicious and nutritious!

My digestive systems really appreciates it when I eat this way. It rewards me by not getting bloated, crampy, and miserable. A return to traditional foods and preparation techniques has benefitted the whole family. We rarely get sick with those nasty viral bugs that seem to go on a rampage this time of year. And, I believe I would have healthier bones if I’d been eating this way all along. But alas, all I can do is move forward. I’m grateful for the wake-up call of Crohn’s disease which made me realize that all the processed foods were harming my family. Now, I know. Now, I can nourish my little ones. And myself.

Cold weather does that to me too, I think it was from being raised in Western NY. We did a lot of crock pot cooking in the winter time. During the times when it rains I like to bake, go figure. In the summer it is toal grilling time and fall makes me want to curl up next to a fire as the leaves fall. Isn't it funny how the seasons do that to us?

Last night for a treat we visited a greek/moroccan food restaurant. While my husband is "sometimes" adventurous about foods he isn't as much as I am and our daughter. Our granddaughter tasted one thing and said "oh yucky". It was very good but boy was I glad that I didn't get big portions like them.

The newest thing that I've been made aware of is coconut oil, I have yet to find it and try it out. Ever tried it?

That restaurant sounds fantastic. There's a new Indian restaurant here in Montgomery that I've been wanting to try for a while now. I love a good food "adventure"!

I'll have to post about coconut oil soon. I've had it in my diet for almost a year now, and I love it! It's a natural anti-viral and anti-fungal (great for those struggling with candida). I'm sure to have some every single day.

I love coconut oil!

I got away from eating it (and oils) as much when I had to re-introduce carbs into my diet to go along with the Chinese medicine course I was taking. I had been having problems with Candida and also had lost weight to fast trying to fight it and then became sick b/c my liver got to toxic--oh man, what a long story!

I use a dab (thumbnail size) of coconut oil as a carrier for the oregano oil I take after every time I use a neti rinse. (1-4 drops, depending upon whether people around me are sick).

My eating has NOT been anything good lately, and this is a month to change that, but basically I don't worry about fat content really at all! I eat oil with lemon on my salads, eggs fried in danish butter and or coconut oil, and etc.

I worry about refined carbs always, and carbs when I'm working to loose weight of almost any type.

And, lately the things I worry about most are food preservatives. I don't know much about them, but I know that my digestion goes ALL WRONG when I eat food processed with preservatives. I almost can't eat anything canned, and many prepared sauces, too.

Seems like it flares up sometimes and is worse than others. I mentioned it to a friend who was using a jarred pasta sauce, "Wow, that recipe sounds good, but I'd not be able to use the sauce so I'd need to look up how to make it." and he said, "It's fine b/c it's organic. Just get the organic one." Grr. People really think that just because it says organic it can be "preserved" for the store shelf w/o any preservatives, lol!

Well, I talked about this more than I meant to, but I always so enjoy your food posts because you seem to be paying more attention to health methods than I am lately and it reminds me that I need to study up!~

Berit, I seriously recommend you read Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon - if you haven't already. This book revolutionized the way I eat, and I'm so much healthier now.

I'm still struggling with bone issues caused by years of improper nutrition, but I am hopeful that better days are on the horizon. Our bodies replace (generate new) bone mass at the rate of 20 percent each year. Hopefully, by the time I've been eating this way for 5 years, I'll have healthy bones!

Sorry to hear you had flare-up, it may not make a difference in your case, but my DH's beloved oats for breakfast or in crisps were a biggie here, even with certified gluten-free oats. His ND suggested a break from oats, he he felt much better.

The tea party was precious! And the quilts beautiful :)

Can't agree more, soups and stews are just what are needed in the winter. And you know what I'm like with beans, what a useful addition they are, dried or tinned, I have both in my cupboard.

Throwback, I'm glad you're husband found some relief. Crohn's can be such an unpredictable disease. After giving up gluten (except for sourdough - in strict moderation) it would BREAK MY HEART to give up oats. Although, I certainly will look into that aspect of my food. I have been eating much more oats since giving up wheat. Hmmm... could be a trigger. Thanks for sharing.

Ann, I thought it very fitting that you posted about bean soup this week! We had lentils last night and I couldn't help but think of you across the pond!

I love my crockpot not only because it's convenient, but also because it uses less electricty. Win-Win!!!
